Help Your Shy Child Make Friends

Shyness is one of the major factors that prevent children from seeking companionship among their peers. While it can range from silence and uneasiness around other people to completely avoiding contact, shyness, according to specialists, is an issue that is more genetic than social. Kagan's research shows that shy children ''have highly reactive nervous system, resulting in a lower threshold for stimulation or arousal. When faced h new people or situations, they become easily stressed or frightened. Children who are innately shy often have a close relative who is shy as well.''

In spite of the strong genetic pull toward bashfulness, stresses the important role a child's parents and environment play ih his balanced growth and development. With awareness, guidance, and support, you can help your child adjust to new situations and slowly come out of his shell when he is ready and willing. Keep in mind that the steps out of shyness and into friendship involve the use of different skills that each take different lengths of time to develop.
